Perineural injection treatment, sometimes known as subcutaneous prolotherapy or neural prolotherapy, is a new and effective form of pain treatment for painful knees, shoulders, neck, hips, low back and ribs. It is also great for tennis elbow, sciatica, tendonitis, fibromyalgia and many more conditions! This is a safe and effective treatment for painful conditions that was developed by Dr. John Lyftoft, a sports medicine doctor who focusses on the treatment of pain.
How does it work?
The treatment involves small volume injections of 5% dextrose solution superficially under the skin, using a very small needle after an thorough diagnosis is assessed as to the cause of the pain. The working hypothesis is that dextrose helps to repair inflamed nerves and these inflamed nerves are known to cause chronic painful conditions, also knowns as “neuropathic pain” or “neurogenic inflammation”. These small nerves are innervate muscles, ligaments and tendons and when they become inflamed, they prevent healing of these tissues.
Who can benefit from perineurial injection treatments?
People experiencing pain, chronic or acute can benefit from perineural injection. Even if you have been treated in the past with other injections, such as cortisone, or have had surgeries for pain inducing conditions, you can receive this treatment.
Most patients get pain reduction in as little as 1-2 treatments, others need 5-6 treatments.
